Why it's worth your time
The Antalya Museum (Antalya Müzesi) is consistently ranked among Turkey's best archaeology museums, and it's the natural companion piece to visiting Perge, Aspendos and the other ruins scattered around the city — a huge share of what was excavated at those sites ended up here rather than staying on-site.
What to look for
The Perge Gallery
Room after room of Roman-era statuary excavated at Perge, including an exceptional run of imperial portrait busts — the single best reason to visit.
Regional archaeology
Finds spanning roughly 3,000 years, from early Bronze Age pieces through Lycian, Greek, Roman and Byzantine periods.
Icon collection
A strong collection of Byzantine and later religious icons, a different register from the classical statuary in the main halls.
Ethnography wing
Ottoman-era costumes, jewellery and household objects — a change of pace from the ancient galleries, and popular with families.
Planning your visit
- Time needed: a focused visit takes 1.5–2 hours; allow closer to 3 if you want to read most of the labelling.
- Location: on the western edge of the centre, an easy taxi or dolmuş ride from Kaleiçi, and walkable from parts of Konyaaltı.
- Best paired with: visit before Perge or Aspendos if you can — the context makes the ruins themselves easier to read once you've seen what was found there.
- Photography: generally permitted without flash in most galleries; check current signage on entry.
Our take: this is the rare museum that actually improves the ruins you visit afterward — seeing the statues that once stood in Perge's colonnaded street changes how you read the empty pedestals when you get there.
