The city Rome never took
Termessos sits high in the Taurus Mountains inside Güllük Dağı National Park, perched at over 1,000m, and it's famous for one thing above all: Alexander the Great looked at its defences and decided it wasn't worth the fight, and the Romans never fully subdued it either. What's left today is a ruined city in one of the most dramatic settings of any ancient site in the region — and because it requires real effort to reach, it stays far quieter than Perge or Aspendos.
What's there
Planning your visit
- Fitness required: this is a genuine hike, not a stroll — a steep, uneven path from the car park up to the main ruins, roughly 30–45 minutes each way at a moderate pace.
- Footwear: proper hiking or trail shoes, not sandals — the path is rocky and can be slippery.
- Water: bring more than you think you need; there's no shop or tap once you're inside the park.
- Getting there: about an hour from central Antalya; a rental car, taxi-for-the-day or organised tour are the realistic options, as there's no straightforward public transport link.
