What Pamukkale is
Pamukkale means "cotton castle" — brilliant white travertine terraces formed by calcium-rich mineral springs cascading down a hillside, paired with the extensive ruins of the Roman/Byzantine spa city of Hierapolis directly above them. It's one of Turkey's most photographed sites, and one of the very few genuinely worth the long drive from Antalya.
The catch: it's genuinely far
Pamukkale is roughly 3–3.5 hours from Antalya each way by road — this is the single most important thing to understand when planning. It's entirely doable, but it changes how you should structure the trip.
How to actually do it
What to see once there
- The travertine terraces: walk barefoot on the designated path (shoes aren't allowed on the terraces themselves) through the white pools — go early to avoid both crowds and the worst of the heat.
- Hierapolis: a large ancient spa city above the terraces, including a well-preserved theatre and the Antique Pool, where you can (for an extra fee) swim among submerged Roman columns.
- The necropolis: one of the largest ancient cemeteries in Anatolia, an easy add-on walk from the main site.
