Sand or pebbles: know before you go
The biggest thing to understand about Antalya's beaches is that they're not all sand. The two main city beaches are genuinely different, and picking the wrong one for your expectations is a common source of disappointment.
Lara Beach
A long stretch of fine golden sand east of the centre, backed by Antalya's biggest resort hotels. This is the beach most people picture when they think "Antalya" — wide, sandy, and set up for sunbeds and watersports. It's a straightforward taxi or dolmuş ride from central Antalya, or the obvious choice if you're staying at a resort along this stretch.
Konyaaltı Beach
A long pebble (not sand) beach much closer to the city centre, with the Beydağları mountains rising dramatically behind it — arguably the more scenic of the two. The pebbles mean water shoes are genuinely useful here. It's backed by a long promenade, park and beach clubs, and is easy to reach from Kaleiçi without a long taxi ride.

Beyond the city: quieter options
Practical notes
- Free vs. paid sections: both Lara and Konyaaltı have free public stretches as well as paid beach clubs with loungers, shade and facilities — worth deciding in advance which you want.
- Water shoes: genuinely useful at Konyaaltı and most of the pebble coves west of the city.
- Sun protection: shade is limited on the open sand at Lara; a beach umbrella or shaded lounger is worth paying for in peak summer.
