Lara is a beach base, not a substitute for central Antalya
Lara makes most sense when the beach and resort facilities are the main event. The coastal strip lies east of central Antalya and combines a long beach with a heavy concentration of hotels, beach businesses and holiday infrastructure. GoTürkiye currently describes Lara as a long beach with gentle waves, darkish sand and some small pebbles, with the main public-beach area supported by Antalya municipality.
I would choose Lara because you want an easy resort rhythm with occasional city time — not because somebody has labelled it “close to everything”. Kaleiçi, the old harbour and the western side of Antalya are a separate part of the day, and road time varies with traffic.

What the beach is actually like
Lara is the sand-first choice among Antalya city’s two big beach zones, but do not imagine one uniform private-resort frontage. There are municipal/public stretches as well as hotel and commercial beach sections, and the mix changes as you move along the coast. If “walk straight from the room onto a specific type of beach” matters, check the exact hotel map and beach access rather than assuming every Lara property sits on the same section.
The open coast can feel very exposed in midsummer. Shade, water and a deliberate midday plan matter more than squeezing another attraction into the hottest part of the day.
Who Lara suits
- Families: useful when pools, children’s facilities, a beach and easy in-resort dining matter more than being able to walk to historic sights.
- Resort travellers: strong fit if the hotel is part of the holiday rather than merely somewhere to sleep.
- Short beach breaks: practical when you want to minimise daily decision-making and keep most days coastal.
- Old-town-first travellers: usually better in Kaleiçi or closer to the centre, then visit Lara for a beach day.
Where in Lara matters
“Lara” is used loosely in hotel marketing, so check the actual pin. Some properties sit closer to the city/clifftop side and Lower Düden; others are farther east along the resort coast. That changes your taxi time, restaurant choices and how naturally Kaleiçi fits into an evening.
The Lower Düden Waterfall is the obvious nearby non-beach landmark: the river drops from Antalya’s cliffs into the Mediterranean. It is easy to combine with a Lara-side coastal day, but I would still treat the waterfall viewpoint and a full beach afternoon as two separate blocks rather than a frantic checklist.
Getting between Lara, the airport and the old town
Lara is on the airport side of Antalya, which can make arrival and departure simpler than bases west of the centre. For central sightseeing, use current municipal/public-transport journey planning or a metered/licensed taxi rather than relying on a fixed “15-minute” promise from an old guide. Antalya traffic can turn a neat map distance into a much less neat transfer.
If you expect to go into Kaleiçi every day, that repeated commute is the real accommodation cost to compare — not just the room rate.
Food and evenings
Large resorts can make it very easy to eat every meal on site. That is convenient, but it can also leave you seeing less of Antalya’s regional food. If local dishes matter, plan at least one meal away from the buffet and use our Antalya food guide to look for piyaz, hibeş and other regional flavours rather than a generic “Turkish night”.
For a more atmospheric evening, Kaleiçi still has the stronger historic-street setting. Lara wins when you want the easiest return to bed after a beach/resort day.
Lara or Konyaaltı?
Choose Lara if sand and resort infrastructure are the priority. Choose Konyaaltı if you prefer a long pebble beach, a public promenade/park feel, mountain views and a base that sits on the western side of the city. Neither is “best Antalya”; they create different holidays.

- Confirm whether beach access is public, hotel-controlled or across a road.
- Check what is genuinely included if you are paying for an all-inclusive stay.
- Compare repeated city transfers if Kaleiçi is high on your list.
- Keep one flexible beach/resort day instead of pre-booking every hour.
Bottom line: Lara is the right Antalya base when the sandy coast and resort life are what you came for. If the old city is the centre of your trip, stay closer to the old city and treat Lara as a day out.
